My three English poems have been translated by bilingual poet Utpal Chakraborty.

New Normal and I

By Gopal Lahiri
(Old order changeth yielding place to new)

Old order is ready for departure
masked women, men, children stand apart
on the pavement,
a monster virus changes our life,
so far so near; the new normal.

I can notice a spot of grass riffling
amid the concrete,
an unknown creature is chewing on roots,
critters rustle in the bushes in light rain
I am a super hero of senses in exile.

Feel the screen, feel the love in your eyes
listen only to your phone chirps, late-night whispers,
I am numbed to the outside world.

I cannot touch you, cannot smell your presence
my vision blurs, my mind dies.

Here I am alive in isolation,
breathing in soulless life’
waiting for a new world.

The other I

I am in search of the other I.

Memories swirl, unspoken,
membranes pierced

wounds come from the same source,

power denies,
moves with me like shadow.

I can feel but can never touch.

No roles to take, no games to play
colours alluring, strokes of the brush,

Light spillages , sound mutes, whisper dies, shadows lengthening

You are here but far beyond
Real and more real!

 Exult

Somewhere you draw in the air the world map
Look upon time as another possibility,

Making a honest living and remembering God
All pervading force will be striding in your soul.

Some days, you need to remind yourself-
Rejoice in the blessings of life,

Moon shadows spill silence over the scar
And think of each soul as blossoming flowers, rising stars,

Each moment is the music of the soul erasing
Days bleed into twilight, weigh nothing.

The songbirds are out in the open,
Truth lives on the edges off the meandering river.

Each word is a voice, each letter an identity,
Dream and desire are engraved in the vast landscape.
